Education is the key to knowledge. Knowledge is the door to opportunity. Every young person who joins TAP is made aware that they must maintain at least a minimum 2.5 GPA. Our statistics show that those who remain active for one year exceed the minimum of 2.5 to a maximum of 3.92 GPA. Each grading period, performance is visually checked and logged to chart individual and group progress. Within TAP is a group of at-risk youth for whom there is special focus. Through various agencies, volunteer groups and staff, tutoring and other special needs are identified and met. Staff members go a step further by being granted permission to interact with school officials on all issues pertaining to each youth. In many cases, this adds a missing element, another caring adult that advocates for the student and partners with parents and school officials.
Newly inaugurated, the Wilderness Survival Camp, has become a premier of events.
The school is run by Thomas and Della Rhem, who teaches outdoor survival skills in four phases from basic through advanced. Members learn basic skills such as, identifying edible plants, basic fire building, knot tieing, shelter construction, compass reading, rappelling and spelunking.
"Travel broadens the mind." Boundaries are the artificial lines that exist on a map. TAP members travel to destinations in Florida, Kentucky, Alabama, the Bahamas, Grand Cayman, and Egypt. Getting out of the city in which they live sparks an enthusiasm that causes young people to explore their connections to others on the planet, and sparks an intense desire to travel in the future.
Each person is part of a larger community beyond the known artificial boundaries that are set in every life. TAP helps to erase these boundaries by requiring members to perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service annually. TAP youth participate in on-going community service projects such as local nursing home visitation, shoreline clean up, the hosting of an informational and recruitment booth at the annual African Street Festival, assisting in an annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsered by a prominent elected official, and community gardening. Our young people reach out to other young people thru a pen pal project in the Bahamas and by recruitment trips to local schools, community, and church groups
TAP creates a building block structure that encourages success, builds confidence, and spurs their desire to continue until success becomes a way of life.
